Market
I was inspired to do this picture by the abundance of fresh food, the early morning sunshine and the quiet harmony of the traders and shoppers, going about their business before the heat and hustle of the day. This is reflected in the balanced symmetry of the composition and the self-contained figures depicted, oblivious to being the subjects of someone’s picture. The scene contrasted with the increasingly busy day, and the aggression of the beggars who appeared later on, demanding a few francs from passers-by.
I did not want to be seen as a beggar, or a sponger and when I felt I was becoming beholden, then it was time to move on. I was conscious of straying over the line where I was no longer welcome. In the words of the Supertramp song: “Read the signs and walk away”
